This byway was developed parallel to the Miami and Erie Canal which operated between 1840 and 1860. Consequently, much of the history and recreation associated with this route is related to the Canal and its history. For example, many hiking and walking trails have been shaped from old towpath trails (paths draft animals made when they towed the boats.)
