The Appalachee Scenic Byway traverses the western end of the Apalachicola National Forest. The flat, grassy savannahs are home to a wide variety of wildflowers such as orchids, sudews, and carnivorous pitcher plants. The byway passes through forests of oak, cypress, and long leaf pine, and is home to several varieties of wildlife, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.

The byway also provides access to several recreation areas, including three campgrounds with restrooms and boat docks. There are many opportunities for hunting, boating, fishing, and wildlife observation.
