The longest stretch of coquina rock outcroppings in the nation are located along the A1A beaches. Within the tidal pools, one may find crabs, small fish, sea stars, and sea snails, among others. Many birds also find the pools provide a great lunch, so it is an exciting bird-watching venue as well. Further south the least terns often nest along the beach. Loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles also nest on the corridor beaches.

The Oceanarium at Marineland was constructed in 1937. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Oceanarium is an example of the "Nautical Moderne" style of architecture. The Oceanarium is currently undergoing revitalization and is emphasizing education and close encounters with the sea animals.

This overlook from the State Road 100 Bridge shows the expanse of the Flagship Harbor Preserve on the left. This preserve has over 3000 feet of boardwalk through the saltwater marsh to the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). Within the preserve, there are interpretative signs along hiking trails and a picnic pavilion, as well as picnic areas along the trails. One may fish the ICW or hike to the Wickline Center for more active recreational pursuits. In the foreground is Moody Boat Launch, which provides free launch facilities, as well as another fishing pier along the ICW.

A long wooden boardwalk over sand dunes welcomes visitors to the tan colored beaches and calm blue waters of the Atlantic. This ocean setting is set against a blue cloudless sky. While there are a number of beachgoers sitting on colored blankets along the shoreline, most are probably unaware of the history of this stretch of beach that has included English and Spanish warriors fighting to take back control of this strategic portion of North Florida.

One of the more unique recreational opportunities found along the corridor includes activities like sailing with the winds. In the foreground is a parasailer with a bright orange sail, a black wetsuit, and red surfboard skimming across the waves. This sailor is set against the stark, dark blue waters and light blue sky, that are divided by a thin ribbon of grey sand. This picture makes one believe that this solemn sailor is the only person in the water.

This picture depicts the sweeping dunes of the Matanzas Inlet. To the east, the Atlantic Ocean rushes in under the Claude Varn Bridge and into the backwater areas of the Matanzas River to the east. While these grey dunes and blue waters offer a very calming sense to the viewer, in past centuries, the inlet served as the backdoor into St. Augustine. At that time a heavily-armored Spanish Fort stood watch to prevent all intruders from heading up the river to St. Augustine.

While the inlet certainly has a long history, today's recreational enthusiasts take advantage of calm waters. In the forefront, three anglers wade from the shoreline into the shallow waters along a rock jetty. All three have fishing poles and wear long-billed caps. In the distance a sailboat appears to bob gently in the inlet's waters, while in the far distance, the byway spans the inlet.

Multiple large boats sit tied up in individual marina slips protected from the elements by a large u-shaped bulkhead. Palm trees line the edges of the marina and the viewer can clearly the reflection of a single sailboat in the forefront of this picture in the marina's calm waters. These boats sit quietly today but many are gone throughout the year as their owners ply the local waters exploring and enjoying the byway community.

This is an up-close photo of the Castillo. It clearly depicts the large stone structure that has stood for centuries. Its angular structure and tall tower stands watch over the town of St. Augustine. While there is little vegetation in the picture, the blue sky in the background helps to define the sprawling grounds of the fort. While a tourist attraction today, this fort served as the centerpiece of Spain's defense of their territory in North Florida.

This picture provides a view of the Matanzas River leading in to downtown St. Augustine from the very top of the lighthouse. The wrought-iron railing that surrounds this walkway is painted red. From this perspective, the viewer can see the River that stretches toward the horizon and disappears into the blue sky. While this view offers today's visitor a unique vantage point, this walkway allowed the original lightkeepers to better assist the vessels as they navigated their way into the city.

While the single tourette is still prominently displayed, a series of black iron cannons now seem to be peering over the wall on the first floor. A1A is truly a destination unto itself. Visitors are attracted to the road for many reasons. This picture depicts an annual cycling event that is held along A1A. While this rest stop is located at Fort Matanzas, those shown in the picture with their multi-colored jerseys are indicative of one of the special uses that this road offers. While this event is unique, residents and visitors take advantage of the corridor on a daily basis.

For nearly 100 years, the Marineland Oceanarium has attracted visitors from all over the world. The facility visitors first-hand experience with creatures that they've only read about. The facility has changed over the years and today's operation still attracts those looking to experience that can become second-nature to the residents of Florida. The picnic areas and multi-colored umbrellas offer visitors an opportunity to look toward facility demonstrations or the Ocean.
