Director, Office of Natural Environment

In February 2020, Gary Jensen was appointed Director of the Office of Natural Environment at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).  In this role, he provides executive leadership and oversight to the development and coordination of national policies, guidelines, standards, procedures, and techniques for the consideration of various environmental and human factors associated with the Federal-aid highway program.  Gary leads his team to accelerate highway projects by efficiently addressing air quality, transportation conformity, noise, and the resiliency of the transportation system

 

Previously, Gary served as the Livability Team Leader within the FHWA Office of Human Environment, where he directed the work of a multi-disciplinary team to carry out FHWA's strategic integration of human environment and community considerations in transportation program delivery.  During his tenure, Gary led the development of a new approach to measuring multimodal network connectivity through innovative, cutting edge research.  Prior to this assignment, Gary served as the Research Implementation Team Leader within the Office of Human Environment where he established and led a team of internal and external partners to develop and implement capacity innovations under the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2).  Gary began his career with FHWA as a Highway Engineer Trainee and has been selected for roles of increasing responsibility since joining the agency in 1994. 

 

Gary holds a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Idaho.
