Ritter, RobertAssociate Administrator for Safety
In February 2024, Robert Ritter (Rob) became the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Associate Administrator for Safety. In this role, Rob oversees a multidisciplinary staff in the administration of highway programs, to include developing and implementing highway safety policies and advancing FHWA and U.S. Department of Transportation safety initiatives to reduce the frequency and severity of highway crashes. Prior to this position, Rob served as Director, Office of Safety Technologies since July 2023. In this capacity, Rob provided leadership, policy guidance, and technical assistance to many stakeholders including FHWA Divisions, States and cities on advancement and implementation of highway safety infrastructure technologies including intersections, roadway departure, pedestrians, speed management, and other safety related programs. Rob was first appointed to the Senior Executive Service (SES) as the Director, Office of Impaired Driving and Occupant Protection with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In this position, he worked to reduce the incidence of alcohol and drug-impaired driving, increase seat belt and child safety seat use, and reduce distracted and drowsy driving. Rob also led research and development activities and leveraged partnerships to develop and disseminate programs, best practices, communication and other tools to reduce risky driving behavior and resulting crashes, injuries and fatalities. Prior to being appointed to the SES, Rob had a 15-year career with FHWA in various positions including Managing Director, Office of Innovative Program Delivery; Strategic Integration Team Leader, Office of Safety; Office of Human and Natural Environment; and Capacity Building Team Leader, Office Planning. Rob has over 25 years of experience in transportation safety, policy, planning and implementation in public, private and non-profit positions. Rob earned his Master's degree in Transportation from Morgan State University and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Rutgers University. Rob is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland. |
