BIO - 

On January 3, 2011, Karla Petty became the FHWA Division Administrator of the Arizona Division.  She leads an office of 23 professionals that delivers an annual Federal-aid Highway Program of approximately $1 Billion and numerous discretionary grant projects in Arizona.  Prior to this assignment, Karla was serving as an advisor to FHWA Leadership on implementation of performance management of the Federal-aid Highway program.  

Karla joined the FHWA in 1983 entering the Highway Engineer Training Program. She left FHWA for a brief stint (from 2000 to 2005) where she worked in the private sector as a transportation consultant.  

Other work assignments with the FHWA include the following:  Division Administrator, Colorado; Highway Safety Specialist, Office of Safety, Arizona; Assistant Division Administrator, Missouri; District Engineer and Systems Manager, Georgia; Area & Safety Engineer, South Carolina; and Assistant Area Engineer, Texas. 

Karla is a native of West Virginia.  She is a 1983 graduate of West Virginia Institute of Technology where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.  Karla is a registered Professional Engineer in South Carolina. 

During her career, Karla has been the recipient of numerous performance and honor awards, including the 2020 FHWA Women Leaders in Transportation; 2018 Richard D Morgan Leadership Development; 2015 Organizational Excellence - Arizona Division; 2013 WTS Phoenix -Women of the Year; USDOT Secretary's Gold Medal Award; an FHWA Administrator's Superior Achievement Award; and the Central Missouri Federal Woman of the Year Award.
