F5a- Matanzas Inlet

This picture depicts the sweeping dunes of the Matanzas Inlet. To the east, the Atlantic Ocean rushes in under the Claude Varn Bridge and into the backwater areas of the Matanzas River to the east. While these grey dunes and blue waters offer a very calming sense to the viewer, in past centuries, the inlet served as the backdoor into St. Augustine. At that time a heavily-armored Spanish Fort stood watch to prevent all intruders from heading up the river to St. Augustine.
