The Alligator River Route features several of North Carolina s most unique characteristics. From Lake Mattamuskeet to Roanoke Island, the Alligator River Route will sweep travelers through an area holding both natural and historical sites. The Alligator River Route runs through North Carolina s wetlands and swamps, giving visitors a view of life near the coast. Two Wildlife Refuges located along the byway are habitats for migratory birds and endangered species. The communities included in the byway are noted for their unique names that give clues to the land and its history. Travelers are invited to explore places like Frying Pan Landing or Gum Neck. The heritage of the native tribes of the area can be found in the names of Croatan Sound and Manteo. Exploring this byway will give travelers a new understanding of the earliest colonial times of the nation.
