Associate Administrator for Safety

In August 2019, Cheryl Walker became the Associate Administrator for Safety with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).  In this capacity, she provides executive leadership and direction in the development and implementation of strategic national initiatives, programs, and policies to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the Nation's 4 million miles of public roads.

Prior to this position, Cheryl served as the Director, Office of Safety Programs, where she was responsible for developing and implementing highway safety policies, and for identifying critical issues and opportunities related to safety programs. 

Prior to this assignment, Cheryl served for over six years as the Director, Office of Legislative Affairs and Policy Communications, where she provided leadership for FHWA's Congressional relations, legislative analysis and executive policy communications.  In 2018, she served as the FHWA Acting Executive Director, functioning as the agency's top-ranking career executive during a period of leadership transition.  Cheryl has served in positions of increasing responsibility in the Office of the Chief Counsel, Office of Policy, and Office of the Administrator. 

Prior to joining FHWA, Cheryl served for three years as an attorney with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and, for a decade earlier, as an attorney in an energy regulatory practice for a Washington, D.C. law firm.  Before attending law school, she worked as an electrical engineer for General Motors Corporation. 

Cheryl holds a Juris Doctor from The National Law Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Kettering University in Flint, Michigan.
